See the Stars

Looking for a good gift for a fledgling astronomer?  This brief but interesting book may be just what you are searching for.

See the Stars: Your First Guide to the Night Sky by Ken Croswell focuses on one constellation each month:

  • Orion.
  • Big Dipper.
  • Leo.
  • Boötes.
  • Lyra.
  • Cygnus.
  • Scorpius.
  • Sagittarius.
  • Cassiopeia.
  • Perseus.
  • Auriga.
  • Taurus.

Observers will find out when and where to find each of these constellations, and then will explore the most notable features of each.  Along the way, children will learn about some of the wonders of the night sky:

  • Star colors.
  • Nebulae.
  • Pointer stars.
  • The North Star.
  • Planets.
  • Double stars.
  • Black holes.
  • Star clusters.
  • The Milky Way.

A telescope is not necessary to enjoy this book, but binoculars are handy.

Use your discretion!  Although mythology is told in its mildest form, the evolutionary time frame (billions of years ago…) is presented as a foregone conclusion.

If you are willing to address this, however, See the Stars is a fun but informative introduction to favorite constellations.
