Poetry is an art form, make no mistake. A well-written poem is all about the effect on the reader; rhyme, meter, and other such technical aspects are simply means to the desired end.
That said, it never hurts to look for new ways of using the tools at one’s disposal. Understanding the technical side of poetry can help us when we’re stuck in a rut or need to revise a verse for greater impact.
So what is in the poet’s toolbox? Take a look:
- Form.
- Perspective.
- Language.
- Meter.
- Rhyme.
- Sound.
Rhyme alone does not a great poem make. For best results, you will want to apply all of these tools to make every word and sound count.
